Horror movie dreams

Posted by kraftymiles on April 10, 2008

Well, I’ve not written anything in a while mainly because I’ve been off out doing less boring things instead.  OK, some of them were less boring, some of them were just needed, but anyway, I’ve not been in front of a computer in about a month hence the lack of writing.

In that time I’ve been put on some new medication and it is great.  Really great.  It’s a lovely combo of codeine, Valium, NSAIDs and Paracetamol.  It’s all for the pain you see.  I take something like a couple of valiums, 40 Ibuprofens, a gram of codeine and half a pound of paracetamol a day.  Why do I mention this?  Well it may go someway to explaining the rest of the article.

Bono and Wikipedia

Posted by kraftymiles on March 18, 2008

So as I rather poorly described last week, Bono’s boys have indeed been putting up the cash for Wikipedia to the tune of 1.35million US dollars over the last few years. Wonder what they will ask for in return? As an aside is there nothing that pop stars do not know?

The story at the Reg

If Elevation Partners have “invested” in Wikipedia eather than donating the $1.35 million, then someone is giong to get a smacked wrist! On the flip side, anyone donating that kind of money could hav put it to better use. (IMHO) 1.35 million will go a long way towards providing clean water drinking water around the worlds developing nations rather than allowing a bunch of middle class kids to cheat no their homework.

CIA and Facebook

Posted by kraftymiles on March 17, 2008

OK, so I’ll fess up to this from the start. I LOVE conspiracy theories. Absolutely love em. Give me an awkwardly put together set of facts with no definite outcome and I’ll start looking at the possibilities. It’s probably because I’m an analyst that makes me so interested in em, after all, it’s my job to look at complex problems and offer solutions.
The latest one that I’ve read this week is that the CIA ponied up a bunch of cash for Facebook. No, really.

Friend Feed

Posted by kraftymiles on March 14, 2008

Got to admit to loving Friend Feed

FriendFeed enables you to keep up-to-date on the web pages, photos, videos and music that your friends and family are sharing. It offers a unique way to discover and discuss information among friends.

So basically you can link your blog, flickr account, Amazon wish list and whatever to one place so that you can see at a glance what people are up to. Big plus for me is that I don’t need to sign up to twitter to see what people are up to. Imagine the Facebook newsfeed, but without all the daft vampires / food fight stuff etc and of course FB holding onto your photos etc. And you dont need to approve the friend requests, which is great for stalking.

The Murky world of Merkey

Posted by kraftymiles on March 13, 2008

So, after the last post about Jimmy Wales being in trouble again over taking cash from a donor and then “adjusting” their bio entry on Wikipedia, I got a comment. And this time not a comment from a from a bot or friend but from someone else called “whatonearth” pointing me to a bunch of places on tinternet that had reports on Mr Merkey and his dealings over the years. Darned interesting reading they made, and I did read em all too.

More Wiki Nonsense

Posted by kraftymiles on March 12, 2008

As soon as I finish off the post about pornographer in chief Jimmy Wales and how it is important to be above reproach yourself when representing a non-profit, a chap called Jeffrey Merkey comes out the woodwork and says that for a $5000 USD donation, Mr Wales edited Merkey’s entry in Wikipedia to remove “libellous” content. (Merkey is ex-Novell)

The Death of Google and the Monetisation of Wikipedia

Posted by kraftymiles on March 12, 2008

Well, it’s been a funny old week. There’s the Zuckerborg interview at SXSWi to talk about, which I wont and then the Jimmy Wales expenses coverage, which ICBA to mention. More interesting to me are the two statements in the strap-line for this post. The Death of Google. I wish, I mean I really wish I could remember who said this, but I can’t so apologies to the original commenter. (at SXSWi I believe) “Google is Dead; you can’t index the web”. What a statement! Let’s see if we can qualify it a little. The idea behind this story is that Google are attempting to index EVERYTHING. And of course in doing so fail. It’s a bit like Schroedinger’s cat, as soon as you look to see if the cat is dead, you may in fact be killing it. With Google, as soon as they try and index everything out there, then more and more crap pops up, so they have to add that to the list. SIDEBAR: When Google returns a set of search results, and says “Showing 1-5 of 10,233,440 results” does anyone ever go beyond that first page? Have you ever wondered what links lie at the end of the list? Let me show you.
